View All Critic Reviews Oct 08, The Reader is of interest mainly due to some good, quality shooting and a story where it is difficult to decide what to think of the characters; life isn't simple. Despite the awards and nominations, the acting is not spectacular nor is the film as a whole.

Still, it is worth a look. Robert B Super Reviewer. Jun 28, It's a period drama about someone who reads, so, you know, this is going to be awesomely intense. I'd say that films dealing with Nazism seem to have lost their entertainment value ever since "Schindler's List" came in and said, "Hey, who needs a war movie where something actually happens? Seriously though, you do know that this is going to be quite the weighty drama, not necessarily because it's about Nazism and all of that jazz, but because it's a romantic drama starring Kate Winslet.

A lot of people in this film, such as Ralph Fiennes - who was a super-Nazi in "Schindler's List" - and Bruno Ganz, - who is playing a Holocaust survivor four years after he played Hitler - seem to be apologizing for their own Nazi pasts, but Winslet seems more interested in making up for "The Holiday". Even though I thought that movie was mighty cute, I can sort of respect Winslet for wanting to make up for that sappiness with the sadder romance stuff, but having "Revolutionary Road" released a few days after this film is just plain sadistic, not to people's emotions, per say, but to the quality of this film, by comparison.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, this film is pretty good, but it's hardly "Revolutionary Road", for a number of reasons. I was kind of expecting this film to approach its broad timeline in a nonlinear fashion, and for a long while into the final product, I was expecting it to take the much more episodic approach of segmenting its plot's layers, but when it comes down to it, the film awkwardly tosses in glimpses of a present of to break up flashback segments which, upon shifting, jar, and it doesn't help that each segment outstays its welcome to begin with.

Running a little over two hours, this drama of more than a few layers perhaps seems as though it ought to be relatively tight, but in the end, the film relies quite a bit on meandering material that, before too long, begins to run together, retarding momentum with the help of a certain directorial dryness which all but bores at times. I was fearing that the film would often be rather dull, so I'm rather relieved to find adequate entertainment value on the whole, but when Stephen Daldry's storytelling loses its grip on realized thoughtfulness, momentum takes a serious dip, at least enough for you to soak in the minimalism of the dramatic material to begin with.

Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life - this time as a defendant in the courtroom.

As Hanna's past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. How far would you go to protect a secret? Rated R for some scenes of sexuality and nudity.

User reviews Review. Top review. The Reader is one of my favorite movies from the year It is incredibly complex in the way you react to the characters of the movie. It carries many emotions from sensuality to anger all the way back to that of sympathy and resolution. Many moves advertise themselves as unbiased and fair but nothing gets close to that like The Reader which is able to build sympathy for a character you would never think you could feel towards.

The acting in the movie was phenomenal. Especially that of Kate Winslet who draws out many emotions from whoever is watching. She plays an ex-Nazi guard who has an affair with a 16 year old boy played very well by David Kross. Her bitter, cold attitude, random behavior as well as her past history seems unjustifiable and deplorable. Yet you can do nothing more than feel empathy and compassion towards the shame and humiliation she feels about her one well kept secret.

In the course of her affair she ask for one thing, to be read to. From this do you see the humanity within her. Ralph Fiennes also gave quite a nice performance as an older Michael Berg who looks back on his life and then later finds a way to open himself up through his time of self reflection and sudden realizations towards life.

David Kross plays the younger Michael Berg whose performance was undoubtedly a very good one, maintaining his presence in not letting himself being totally overshadowed.

Overall the performances are very deep and will keep you thinking long after you have seen the movie. The directing and writing also was very key to the emotions felt in this movie. Every scene had to be done precisely and consistently to feel genuinely touched rather than feeling falsely drawn in.

Stephen Daldry did that under his great subtle direction. The writing by David Hare allowed actors such as Ralph Fiennes, David Kross and of course Kate Winslet to give such stunning and deep performances and take the film to another level. I found this movie to be very compelling in many ways. The emotions felt here were not cheap gimmicks but that of feeling true sympathy and forgiveness towards what we would normally describe as something wrong, shameful and reprehensible. I can't remember another film that made me feel these emotions for a character especially after learning one startling secret after another.

This film succeeded in ways that almost movie would likely fail in, it did not come off as generous or light but as remarkably fair as a film or any type of medium can get shedding light on both sides of the spectrum. This is a film that is amazingly thought provoking and will bring out the humanity within all of us and should not be missed.
