Hi, thanks for all your suggestions. I tried looking at all possibilities in terms of manually installing the drivers, but nothing worked. So, in the end I bought an external wi-fi USB stick and using that, I managed to connect to the internet. Once connected, the laptop must have then auto-downloaded the correct driver for the internal modem, because a couple of days later I managed to connect to the internet even without needing the external wi-fi stick.

Also check device manager in Windows and see if the network adapter is listed and is loaded correctly with no bangs and is enabled. The network card is not listed in the BIOS setup menu. Settings for the wireless are listed on there, but they were already enabled.
On the device manager, the network adapter is listed with a yellow exclamation mark - i. That's the only one that's causing a problem - all other drivers for the laptop are working fine. I've spent A LOT of time trying to figure it out. I've uninstalled the Network Controller and re-downloaded the driver from the Dell page but still can't get it to recognize the driver it says there's a compatability issue with my version of Windows, which is Vista.
